A Better Life
by Zoey Stephenson
I have made two trips to Cambodia, the most recent lasting just over three months. When I visited my tuc tuc driver's family in their 8x10 foot bamboo hut, I was shocked to see how poor they were in tangibles, but how rich they were in family and community. I bought a new tuc tuc for them, and continue to send money through Western Union. By sending directly to them, they receive all the money, no middle man or CEO's.
They now have running water, shower, kitchen, and an electric light inside the house. I would encourage tourists to get to know their service providers, and realize these people make about $30. per month, during tourisst season. From end of April until the following December, life is pretty bleak. A few dollars sent each month makes such a difference to their quality of life. I want my Khmer family to live a longer and healthier life, I want to help them move up a step, have the oppourtunity to enjoy a better life.
